YOGYAKARTA-Dozens of world civil engineering experts are scheduled to attend the first international conference on Sustainable Civil Engineering Structures and Construction Materials from 11-13 September 2012 at UGM. This conference is a collaboration between the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Division of Engineering and Policy for Sustainable Environment, Faculty of Engineering, Hokkaido University – Japan, and Institute of Concrete Structures and Buildings Materials, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Geo and Environmental Sciences, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – Germany.
One member of the Organizing Committee (OC) of the conference, Ali Awaludin, Ph.D., said the purpose of the event is to disseminate information and to synergize the latest scientific research results and achievements among civil engineers around the world.
"The growth is quite rapid in terms of technology and material," Ali said, Wednesday (15/8).
Ali acknowledged the progress of civil engineering in the world develops rapidly and is currently focusing on sustainable development. Therefore, the conference will widely discuss the concept of eco-friendly civil engineering construction, renewable materials use, as well as existing materials which can be reused.
"There will be many discussions, for example on eco-friendly building construction and the use of materials that can be recycled," the professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of UGM said.
The conference with the theme Enhancing the role of civil engineering in sustainable environment will present three keynote speakers, Prof. Harald S. Mueller of KIT Germany, Prof. Bambang Suhendro of UGM, and Prof. Tamon Ueda, Japan. In addition, invited people and technical papers from a number of institutions and industries will be present. The number of papers to be presented is about 70, 25 of them are from abroad, including Japan, Germany, USA, UK, Switzerland, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Iran, Pakistan, Macedonia, and Montenegro.
"The two-day conference is in the form of presentation of technical papers that will be followed by a tour to Borobudur Conservation Center on the last day," he concluded.
