YOGYAKARTA – Three teams from UGM: NeverEndingWhy from Computer Sciences, Pertamax from Computer Sciences, and Autis from Electrical Engineering, won silver and bronze medals in the National Student Exhibition in ICT (Gemastik) III 2010, which was held in ITS (Institut Sepuluh Nopember) Surabaya from 5-8 October 2010.
For the Application Development category, NeverEndingWhy team won the silver medal with an application entitled "Quick Porn Scanner". For the same category, the Pertamax team managed to get bronze medal with the title "Pelepah- Online School’s Timetable-Maker. Meanwhile, the Autis team also won a bronze medal in the Web Design category for their design of the website of Electrical Engineering UGM Student Association.
According to a member of Pertamax team, Gatot Fajar, their team consisted of three students of UGM Computer Science Department class 2008, namely Poerwiyanto, Firdaus Ismail Sholeh, and R. Gatot Fajar, with the supervisor I Gede Mujiyatna, S. Kom., M. Kom.
Gatot explained that the initial theme of the application development category is management of education. However, due to the low number of registered participants, the theme was eliminated. Nevertheless, the Pertamax team remained to the original idea in developing educational management application. "The application we developed is school timetable application. We named the application “Pelepah” (Online School Timetable-Maker)," said Gatot on Wednesday (10/11).
The initial phase of application development was initiated by conducting a survey to collect facts and data about the method of schedule’s arrangement of several high schools in Yogyakarta. From the survey, it was found that preparation of the schedule at some high schools is still on trial and error basis. It took three days to one month to do it, involving some administrative staff. Schedules generated in this way sometimes cause two classes conducted at the same time so they need to be changed. "Based on this problem, we design an application that can arrange schedules from the existing data quickly and free from problems," he said.
Application from Pertamax team was constructed by applying the ‘genetic algorithm’ which in several experiments and reference found to be reliable for scheduling problems. This application was built based on the web so all schools in Indonesia can access it easily without the need to download and install, simply by registering on the web for free use.
The total time taken to develop this application is approximately three months. To use this application, users only need to enter the data of subjects, teachers, and classes as well as some of the policies at the school. Having completed the data, users just click on the button ‘create schedule’ and the system will arrange the schedule of the existing data. "Tests showed that the application can arrange schedules in less than one minute. A trial was made with data from a high school which has nine classes at each level," added Gatot.
On that occasion, Gatot explained that Gemastik competition consists of three stages, namely the play off, final and grand final. The play off was followed by 238 teams from all universities in Indonesia. It was conducted online from April to July 2010 by submitting proposals and prototype of application.
From the play off, best 20 participants were selected to go to the final round. The final was conducted on site by doing presentation and demo of programs. From the final round, six teams were selected to make presentation at the grand final round that will determine the first, second and third winners.
