Students of Universitas Gadjah Mada joining student community service in Sarang Mandi and Munggu villages in Sungaiselan sub-district, Central Bangka province, from 20 June – 10 August tried to improve the knowledge and prosperity of the local people through a selection of programmes.
Team coordinator, Aulia Azka Januartrika, said they conducted health programme because many health problems are found in the area due to low health awareness among the residents, starting from malnutrition in toddlers, poor sanitation, low use of contraceptives, or low breastfeeding practices.
“The health issue condition in those two villages are on the poor side,” he said in a release received on Friday (22/7).
Aulia mentioned the other problem is the low utilisation of medical workers. Some still believe the non-medical people such as traditional healers for their health treatment.
Seeing this condition, the students devised a health programme that focuses on people and environment care. They offer free health checks and health screening to people’s houses as well as giving coaching on diseases with high risk factors and toddler’s nutrition as well as good breasfeeding practices.
Doing this mission, the students were all assisted by local authorities. They hope through this programme there would be significant developments on the environment and people’s health.
In addition, the students conducted other agricultural works such as green tracks, local tourism registry, website development, internet training, and aerial image capturing.
