The ISO convention in Edinburgh, UK, from 5-9 September has brought UGM to be the pioneer among developing countries for Disaster Mitigation Technology in the global market. The Landslide Early Warning System produced by UGM was intensively tested by 44 countries joining the ISO to be approved as world reference.
Due to the hard work of UGM researchers led by Prof. Ir. Dwikorita Karnawati, M.Sc., Ph.D, supported by Dr. Teuku Faisal Fathani and Dr. Wahyu Wilopo, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and National Standardisation Agency (represented by Dr. Nyoman Supriatna), the “Landslide Early Warning System” from UGM would undergo further process to be the standard of world reference.
“The success of gaining the international standard will impact on Indonesia’s sovereignty and exploration in disaster mitigation industry in the world,” said Dwikorita on Friday (9/9). All Landslide Early Warning System products of international industry has to refer to the UGM system and technology.
Dwikorita added Indonesia, led by UGM, is the first of middle income countries that proposed their products for international standard. If not doing so, Indonesia will only become the ISO taker that has to pay a great deal for our products to be acknowleded internationally. The success of UGM in the ISO is expected to encourage the downstreaming of research in the country, so Indonesia’s position would rise upwards in the global market.
“There are enough research from UGM that can be processed further to have the international standard, so this can enhance the position of UGM research in the downstreaming of research into the industry,” said the Rector of UGM.
