Many medals were on offer at the 2nd South Asian Geoscience Student Competition 2016 held at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UGM, on 22-27 August 2016. In the competition, UGM won three awards in three different categories.
The first medal was won by the UGM team consisting of Arriqo Fauqi, Andi Nurul Hidayah, and Afifah Nur Anggraini from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. They secured first place in the Geobowl category. Next, Muhammad Sidqi (Department of Geology) took first place in the Essay Writing category. Then, first place for Best Oral Presentation was achieved by Radhi Muammar from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
The UGM team won the Geobowl category after beating dozens of other teams from various universities in Indonesia such as ITB, UB, Padjajaran University, ITS, and UPN.
Arriqo Fauqi said that in the quiz category, all participants had to pass through three stages of selection, namely the preliminary, semi-final and final.
“I am proud to have won this prestigious competition,” he said, recently (26/9) at UGM.
Meanwhile, in the category of Essay Writing, Muhammad Sidqi won first place by submitting a paper on the role of geoscience students in realizing sustainable energy sources. In the paper entitled “Role of Geoscience Students to Support Sustainable Energy Through Geothermal by Community Empowerment Around Geothermal Field Based on Mulidisciplinary Research and Action”, Sidqi elaborated the importance of the contribution of students in the field of geoscience in support of sustainable energy development. Support can be shown in the form of research, publications, discussions and presentations in various scientific forums and community service in geothermal development.
The 2nd South Asean Geoscience 2016 Student Competition is an annual event organized by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. It was first held in 2015 in India. This time, at UGM, the competition was attended by dozens of students from various universities in the ASEAN region. A number of activities were held, such as exhibitions, conferences, competitions for the students, as well as field trips. (UGM / Ika).
