Scientific information is still halfway opened to society. Some people fear that their works would be copied. Others fear their works that have illegally copied from others would be publicly known. According to Drs. Ida Fajar Priyanto, M.A., Ph.D, this situation was interesting to see.
“This is a dilemmatic condition that weakens us in scientific development. But there’ still a solution to it because by opening information will increase higher learning visibility. Higher learning institutions will be more recognised, and so will researchers,” said Ida Fajar during the Forum Indonesia-Malaysia event on Information Science Colloquium at UGM Library on Tuesday (20/12).
Ida Fajar said the scientists and academics should be able to allay the fears because they and their works are legally protected. One thing to do is to make them realise on the significance of scientifc information openness.
The Forum is organised by the UGM Centre for Southeast Asia Social Studies in cooperation with Information Management of UGM Graduate School, University of Malaya and University Technology MARA. The Forum discussed management data research, repository and e-book, digital resource, development in technologies, information and media literacy, etc.
Ida Fajar admitted there had been a shift in science because the library has become information science. With information science, many things can be done, including use of digital facilities, collecting information and how to interact with digitally based tools.
“The library facilitates those that have changed. All has changed, so the behaviour has to change, too. We would help by developing the library as part of the networks. Currently, we are heading to that direction,” he said.
The Forum presented speakers such as Dr. Nor Edzan Nasir (UM) who talked about Research Data Management & University Library, Dra. Luki Wijayanti, S.IP., M.Si (UI) about Research & Data Repository, Dr. Che Zainab (UiTM) about E-Books & Library Return on Investment and Dr. Nurul Diana Jasmi (UiTM) about Application & Best Practise of Media Integration Strategy. Furthermore, Dra. Wina Erwina, M.A (UNPAD) talked about Institutional Memory, Dr. Jammizan Jalaludin (UiTM) Graphic Art for Community and Dr. Khasiah Zakaria (UiTM) Information Literacy Integrated Module: An Innovation of Embedded Librarianship.
Later on, Dra. Woro Salikin, M.L.S., Deputy Head of National Library, said the National Library has transformed itself in giving information in digital forms. For researchers, the Library has a wide selection of reference and all can be used directly. “There is a community for it, also online facilities such as the one research, etc,” she said.
