Nursing students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) became the first winner of Nurse Vaganza 2017 competition at Universitas Islam Sultan Agung, Semarang, Central Java, from 20-22 January. UGM is the champion in both categories of the competition, namely nursing skill and English debate. This made them entitled to go to the national event to be held on 24-26 February along with 16 other teams.
Nurse Vaganza is a prestigious competition organised by Nursing Students Association (ILMIKI) of each region every two years.
In the nursing skill, three students of class of 2013, Ayu Dwi Silvia Putri, Alfi Nurfita Chasanah and Intan Milasari, are the winners. In the English Debate, the winning team consist of three students: Dimas Septian Eko Wahyu Sumunar (2014), Lalitya Paramarta (2014), and Destin Hidayati (2015).
Ayu Dwi said as many as 29 teams participated in the competition, with 19 teams for nursing skills and 10 teams for English debate. They come from 10 universities in Central Java and Yogyakarta, namely Universitas Islam Sultan Agung, Universitas Diponegoro, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Universitas Jendral Soedirman, Universitas Respati Yogyakarta, and STIKES Jenderal Ahmad Yani.
Ayu Dwi explained in the nursing skills category, participants underwent three stages of competition, which are 60 exercises to do, followed by application of nursing skills based on the case they were given.
“Three best teams went to the finals. At that time UGM competed against the teams from Stikes Jendral Achmad Yani and Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta,” she said on Thursday (9/2) at Faculty of Medicine UGM.
Dimas Septian said the English debate used Australasian Debate format. It is divided into three parts: selections, semifinals, and finals.
In the competition Dimas acts as first speaker, Destin second, and Lalitya third speaker. The UGM team has prepared 14 motions since January. They succeeded in the selection, thus going through to the semifnals, and the finals, too. In this last stage, they beat the team from UMY A with a motion This House Would Support AEC in Nursing Scope.
“(I’m) Proud and excited to be able to win this regional competition. Now we keep on practising and preparing ourselves to give our best in the Nurse Vaganza Nasional 2017,” he said.
