UGM Medical students have won Interfaculty of Medicine Scientific Competition (INTERMEDISCO), hosted by Faculty of Medicine UII from 20-23 July 2017. The UGM team was the first winner in educational video category.
As many as 50 universities in Indonesia participated in the competition in five categories, namely educational video, public poster, scientific poster, scientific essay as well as literature review.
The UGM team with members Annisa Nurul Pratiwi Sudarmadi, Aulia Sigra Galayudha, and Rachmat Aldhi Wijayanto presented a video entitled “Know Lupus with Oke-Plus, Face it with a Focus!”
Annisa Nurul Pratiwi said lupus (SLE) is a systemic chronic inflammation that is caused by auto-immune disorders. Lupus may cause disorders in organs such as skin, heart, liver, lungs, brains, digestion, joints, etc. It is found more in female at reproductive age, or 9-14 times than in male.
The prevalence of lupus in the world is around 2/2000 population or 1/1000 population. In Indonesia the number is not yet known. At Dr. Soetomo general hospital, SLE with new patients being diagnosed is about 40 cases per month with various organ manifestations from mild to threatening condition.
“Lupus is known as a 1,000 face disease because between patients there are different complaints,” she said on Friday (28/7).
Lupus also has different disease tracks, making the symptom different from one another. Mild symptoms include joints or mucus membrane, or severe ones that affect vital organ vital, such as consciousness disorder, heart failure, etc. It is also marked with temporary recovery and relapses.
Hence, said Annisa, it is important to know lupus since the beginning. These students introduce the detection of lupus symptoms through OKE PLUS slogan, which is an abbreviation of the symptoms that often occur in the patients.
