The Gadjah Mada Innovation and Technology (GAMA Ina-Tek) team, as one of the centers of excellence for innovation and technology at UGM, currently finished their mission at the International Standard Organization (ISO) General Assembly Meeting which was held on 19 September 2017, in Berlin, Germany. This event was attended by 300 delegations from 100 nations around the world.
The leader of GAMA Ina-Tek Team, Prof. Ir. Dwikorita Karnawati, M.Sc., Ph.D., said the main mission of the UGM Team in Berlin was to promote and share their experience as well as achievements in making an international standard for their community-based landslide early warning system.
“Fortunately, it garnered high appreciation from the world forum as a model or system which needs to be replicated around the world,” said Dwikorita on Sunday (24/9).
According to Dwikorita, Indonesia is considered to be an important country in the General Assembly because it the first developing country to have succeeded in creating an international standard in the early warning system sector.
Therefore, Dwikorita further said that the derived standardization has to be developed from the existing one by making a new international standard for 2 points which are process and products that can encourage the implementation of the community-based landslide early warning system.
“Those points are essential in controlling and leading the global market in the disaster technology sector for maintaining Indonesia’s sovereignty and leadership in the global market,” she added.
According to Dwikorita, in order to strengthen our competitiveness in systems, processes, and technology products, it requires the development of several international standards which become the world references as well as an instrument of global competitiveness. The products of strategic research in Indonesia are expected to be a reference for the world and even dominate the global market. Therefore, this requires supportive policies and facilitation from the government.
“The landslide early warning system has succeeded in becoming the reference for the world standard thanks to strong support and facilitation from UGM and the government, including the National Standardization Agency and National Disaster Management Agency as well as the support from Tahir Foundation-UGM Professorship Chair Program,” said Dwikorita.
