In order to improve animal welfare and reduce harmful sacrificial slaughter by officers, Ir. Panjono, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN as the Head of the UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Fapet) lecturer team developed a prototype portable restraining box or a mobile cow thresher called Gama Abilawa. The tool can move around easily because it is made of iron/steel pipe, is in the form of a rectangular clamp cage equipped with wheels.
Panjono explained that the cow masher or restraining box has only been used in the Slaughterhouse (RPH). In society, not many organizations of sacrificial animal slaughter have restraining devices.
“It is normal if the community does not have this tool because they do not cut throughout the year so that the consideration is not efficient,” he said, at the UGM Faculty of Animal Science on Tuesday (1/9).
According to him, without restraining, the cows are often carried out without the correct method and tend to be rude, causing the cows to become wild. Raging cows will be difficult to control and can injure both administrators and people around the slaughter area.
Therefore, the tool he developed in the form of a portable restraining box hopefully can be an innovative and productive breakthrough to help those who do not carry out slaughter throughout the year, for example, the sacrificial committee.
“Of course, this tool can reduce cows’ inhuman treatment before being slaughtered,” he said.
Using this tool, the cow to be slaughtered is calmly herded into the box without causing stress. When the cow has entered the box, the door is closed, then the box is turned manually so that the cow’s position will adjust the slaughter’s position.
Next, the cow is ready to be slaughtered. With this tool, the cow thresher process can be done quickly in no more than 3 minutes.
With the tools he developed, Panjono is optimistic that it will be a solution for mosques or other institutions that regulate sacrificial animal slaughter. He hopes that public awareness of the importance of using a restraining box will increase so that the welfare of sacrificial animals and officers’ safety is well maintained.
On Eid al-Adha 2020, Al Islaah Mosque and residents in Nitikan Village, Sorosutan, Umbulharjo, Yogyakarta have used this portable restraining box for the first time. Mosque officials and takmirs are enthusiastic about this tool, and it went well.
“From the results of this trial, we will continue to make improvements to Gama Abilawa, apply for patents, and introduce its use to other sacrificial animal slaughter organizers,” he explained.
