Rabita Madina, a Student of the International Undergraduate Program (IUP) from the Faculty of Law UGM, has successfully won 1st place in the 2020 National Student Achievement Selection (Pilmapres) undergraduate category.
Rabita succeeded in accomplishing the best national achievement student after eliminating 443 students from various universities in Indonesia.
“Honestly, when I was announced as the winner, it was beyond expectations. I am very grateful to have had a great support system both from the campus, friends, and family,” she said on Monday (14/9).
Rabita explained that in this Pilmapres, she had to go through a series of selections. The first two selections were at the faculty and then at the university level. After being elected as a faculty representative in the undergraduate program, she proceeded to the National Pilmapres and passed a rigorous selection stage. The first stage of selection was a portfolio, which was attended by 444 students. Moreover, the best 174 progressed in the national and English insight test selection. The best 21 competed in the final to present their creative ideas, self-profiles, English speeches, and panel discussions.
In the competition themed the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, Rabita submitted a creative idea entitled Protection of Independent Contractors in the Gig Economy through the Job Creation Bill. The idea that was carried out focused on legal protection for workers who have independent contractor status. For example, online motorcycle taxi drivers work for gojek/grab, doctors who open online practices in the HaloDoc application, and education personnel who open tutors in Ruangguru and others.
She explained that at the moment, an independent contractor’s status had not been regulated under the law, so that their rights have not been fully met. Industrial relations courts also encounter many cases regarding the status of independent contractors.
“If this status can be regulated under the law, absolutely independent contractors will be better protected,” said Rabita.
Rabita said that the process of success she had achieved could not be assigned from the lengthy preparation of about six months. Besides that, she also tried to show her best and always believes in the efforts made. This achievement cannot be separated from the role of supervisor lecturers and faculties and universities for support and guidance in facilitating preparation for the 2020 National Pilmapres.
Before being selected as the 2020 national achievement student, Rabita often won several awards. Some of them are Best Defense Counsel, Best Defense Team, and Best Non-Native English Team at the 2019 International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition in The Hague, Netherlands, Best Head of Government at ASEAN Foundation ASEAN Model Meeting 2020 in Hanoi, Vietnam, First Winner Speech Contest at ALSA English Challenge FH UNPAD 2019, Best Defense Counsel, Best Defense Team, and Best Non-Native English Team at International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition 2019 in The Hague, Netherlands, and First Winner Speech Contest at BINUS E-Comp 2018.
