UGM Chancellor, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., ASEAN., Eng., said that the graduation ceremony at UGM this time was handled differently due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Covid-19 pandemic requires people to adapt to new habits. Likewise, after being delayed for some time, UGM finally held a graduation ceremony, but this time was carried out online. This policy aims to suppress the chain of the spread of the new coronavirus. Besides, it also encourages people to maintain protection for the health and safety of themselves and those around them.
“This condition is not absolute and may not follow your expectations. However, this does not reduce the meaning and appreciation of struggles you have gone through on campus,” said the Chancellor.
The Chancellor also added that the Covid-19 pandemic had impacted the lives of the world’s nations, including Indonesia. The pandemic has made economic growth take a sharp dive, industry and various business activities experience difficulties, and the threat of layoffs occurs in various sectors. Even so, the Covid-19 pandemic time has some benefit points to unite, strengthen solidarity and care, revive the spirit of community cooperation that had seemed to have disappeared. Also, a pandemic can drive the creativity and innovation of the nation’s children. It is proven that the results of research collaboration between universities and partners in the fields of vaccine and drug discovery, medical devices, and economic recovery efforts have produced many remarkable results.
In his remarks, he also conveyed that UGM has contributed to overcoming the pandemic and its impacts in the last few months, both for UGM academicians and for the wider community. UGM has internally implemented several policy innovations, ranging from online lectures and the provision of data package assistance, basic food assistance for students, UKT relief, and the establishment of the UGM Covid-19 Task Force.
While in a broader scope, UGM has contributed some researchers that have contributed to handle the pandemic’s impact in the health sector through the development of research-based innovation products. Some of them are in the form of a ventilator for Covid-19 patients, GeNose as a rapid detection tool for Covid-19 patients based on volatile organic compounds in the patient’s breath, a rapid detection tool for Covid-19 RI-GHA 19, a thermal gate scanner, a smart swab booth, a mask sterilizer as well as many other innovative products.
Panut hopes that the graduates who have graduated today can contribute to other creative efforts to overcome the pandemic so that people can still feel the impact for the next few years. As an alumnus of UGM, we have a mandate to the alumni to optimally use the knowledge to benefit the people and develop Indonesia.
“Congratulations on your achievements on this campus. These, I know, will be the start of your great journey in the future. As a UGM graduate who has an identity as a national university, university for hard work, Pancasila university, community-university, and cultural center university, I hope that your presence during society can give meaning and lead change for the better, ” he explained.
