UGM is once again in mourning. Prof. Dr. Zanzawi Soejoeti, M.Sc., passed away Saturday (8/5), at the age of 73. The retired Professor of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences passed away after a few days undergoing medical treatment at Bethesda Hospital due to anorisma disease. The deceased left his wife, Dra. Suhartati, and two sons, Hari Nugroho Soejoeti, S.Si. and Norman Kurniawan, S.E., M.S.
The man born in Bantul, August 17, 1936 was buried Sunday (9/5) after having been released from the house of mourning in Jalan Srigunting 9, Demangan Baru, Yogyakarta. Earlier, the deceased was laid in state at the Hall of UGM to obtain last respect from the big family of UGM. Chairman of the Council of Professors UGM, Prof. Drs. Suryo Guritno, M. Stat., Ph.D., expressed his deep condolences over the loss of someone who had a remarkable commitment to the development of science, especially in statistics. "The late Professor was a reliable scientist who was highly consistent in defending his views. In the eyes of peers and students, the deceased is also known as a hard worker. This was demonstrated through his persistence to still perform the full duties until the day before being hospitalized," said Suryo Guritno during the ceremony prior to the funeral, Sunday (9/5), in the Hall of UGM.
During his life, Prof. Zanzawi studied in SR Bantul (1948), SMP Islam Bantul (1952), SMA II B Yogyakarta (1955), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, UGM (1965). Later, he achieved a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin, USA (1962), and a doctorate from the same university (1997). The former rector of Islamic University of Indonesia from 1989-1994, Prof. Zanzawi also served as Regional Coordinator of the Open University of the Province of Yogyakarta Special Region from 1994-1998.
