In the Senate Hall, Tuesday (13/7) Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Nuryono, M.S, is confirmed as a Professor of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UGM. In his speech The Role of Chemistry in the Development of Silica-Based Materials Technology", the Secretary of Chemistry Department UGM, described natural silica material as a reinforcement in the mixture, by taking three samples of materials such as andesite, cement and asbestos. He explained about the synthetic silica, including sources of silica, sol-gel and silica gel process as well as modification of silica gel, with description focus on the chemical aspects, the development of design technology, products utilization as well as prospects and challenges ahead.
In Nuryono’s view, the silica-based biomaterial technology became increasingly developed both in terms of manufacturing technology and its application. Along with the development of precursor type in sol-gel process, nanotechnology, and methods of encapsulation, it will not take long before the revolution of bioimmobilization occured.
According to the man born in Kulon Progo on July 14, 1964, the opportunity of silica-based materials design development is still open in the future. Especially to develop the silica-based materials design to obtain new materials which have higher economic value and technology by utilizing existing local natural resources. The stages of materials design process started from processing silica-rich raw materials into precursor, sol-gel process to obtain silica gel or through nanotechnology. Modifications phase and/or encapsulation is still an open research topic and a challenge for the researchers in which chemical concepts have an important role for designing more efficient new materials products, such as in biotechnology, microelectronics and nanotechnology. "The development of technology materials is important for Indonesia in order to raise local natural resources to the international level," said the husband of Endang Werdiningsih, S. Sos, and father of two sons.
