YOGYAKARTA-Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Prof Ir Sudjarwadi, M.Eng., Ph.D, on Friday (16/7) opened Training of Trainers on UGM Values at the Multi Media Room. The lecturers who are given the training are expected to be able to teach UGM students who will start their study in mid-August until end of course.
Prof Ir Sudjarwadi added that UGM carries the burden of teaching the students bearing in mind that the recent national problems are complex.
“Outside the campus, changes are taking place very fast. The complexities of the national problems are getting bigger, too, and UGM has been trusted to teach these future leaders," he said, opening the training.
Sudjarwadi reminded the trainer candidates that UGM new students are the ‘selected’ ones as they have passed a tight selection. Besides, there are only 18% of students getting admitted, of this figure the percentage that manage to be admitted to favourite universities is less than 18%.
“Of the 18%, those that are admitted to UGM is even smaller," he described.
The Rector added that since 2003, UGM has added learning pillars to students. Focus is no longer on knowledge, skills and mental attitude but also on values. In 2006, the issue of value was initiated to be included in the curriculum.
“Before the character education was talked about, UGM had pioneered the issue of value in 2003 to be developed further,"
Sudjarwadi said.
On this value, UGM had conducted researches to interpret and reflect on UGM values that can be shared by the trainers with students, "Through the Faculty of Philosophy, UGM had tried to interpret and reflect on UGM values," he explained.
Meanwhile, Head of Sinergy Growth sub-section of Student Affairs Directorate, Deni Pranowo,S.Si., M.Si, said the training would be conducted one full day, the first session joined by 59 participants and the second 51. Training materials to be given include the History of UGM, UGM Philosophy, UGM Role, and UGM values.
