Reaching the age of 80, Professor of Pancasila Philosophy UGM, Prof. Dr. Koento Wibisono, said that he was concerned about the condition of the nation with the rampant corruption practices done by state officials alongside the arrest of former Minister, Governor and Regent due to their corruption practices while they were in office.
"It’s getting more complicated. All state money run-out due to corruption and local elections," said Prof. Koento on the sidelines of a seminar to commemorate his 80th birthday at the Faculty of Philosophy of UGM on Saturday (7/8).
The former student of the late Prof. Notonagoro added the condition of the nation became more and more dreadful due to the many criticisms that do not offer any solution. According to Koento, this condition indicated that the democracy has yet to find its form. "People make criticisms but not offer solutions. The government has often been overwhelmed in addressing this complicated situation with the arrest of many state officials," said the man who was born August 14, 1930.
Despite the appalling conditions of this country, Prof. Koento remains optimistic that democracy will find its form along the rise of society’s education and knowledge. "With knowledge, people can distinguish between right and wrong. With knowledge, people will not be easily exploited for a moment of interest. I believe our democracy will be better," said the father of two children.
To deal with the current situation, Prof. Koento always remembers the message from his teacher and idol, Prof. Notonagoro. At every opportunity, says Prof. Koento, Notonagoro told him to be ‘Lantip Ing Panggrahita‘, which means sensitive and sharp in feeling and addressing the situation.
He is not young anymore, but Prof. Koento is still busy with various activities. Currently, he is still tutoring five students for doctoral candidates. With two assistants, the former Rector of UNS is planning to publish his papers in a book, ranging from education, development, philosophy of Pancasila, to national identity, which he collected during the 42 years of teaching. Good luck, Sir!
