500 new students of UGM get free tuition for four years. Students from poor families who made it through the UGM selection of the Disadvantaged Excellent Student Search (PBUTM) scholarship program not only get free tuition but also monthly additional allowance.
"This year, 500 new students get free tuition at UGM for four years. Not only the free tuition, support for living expenses are also added amounting to IDR 500 thousand per month," said UGM Director of Student Affairs, Drs. Haryanto, M. Si, in the meeting with parents of the new students at Grha Sabha Pramana UGM on Wednesday (18/8).
In front of 3187 parents of new students who attended the meeting, Haryanto said that UGM manages 50 scholarship sources allocated for 9671 students for a total of 50 thousand students. "We manage a total of IDR 26 billion scholarship fund for 9671 students," he said.
Haryanto added, the 9345 new students accepted this year also get the opportunity to obtain scholarships, among other: Student Achievement Development Scholarships (PPA) for 2050 students, Student Learning Assistance Scholarship (BBM) for 150 students, and free tuition for as many as 1000 students. "All of UGM students have the opportunity to access this scholarship," he said.
Rector of UGM, Prof. Ir. Sudjarwadi, M. Eng, Ph.D., in his speech said that the new students of UGM is the nation’s best sons and daughters who get the chance to study on UGM campus. They have their own ideals, and they have the mandate from parents, society, nation and State. "As members of UGM, students should learn with gratitude, so, use this opportunity as best as possible," he said.
Sudjarwadi said that the values developed by UGM for its students in order to get to the development and utilization of science for civilization, usefulness and happiness.
Meanwhile, deputy mayor of Yogyakarta who is also a representative of the parents of new students, Haryadi Suyuti, conveyed that students who study at UGM are not only trained to be intellectually smart, but also emotionally intelligent. "From the first, UGM Students are well known for their humility and modesty, but always have the critical thinking and take side of common interests," said this alumnus of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM.
On that occasion, the Rector, symbolically handed over four traditional bicycles to four parents who are disadvantaged families, among other Kasirin (55) from Prumpung, Ngaglik, Sleman, Ngadiyo (45) from Pandak, Bantul, Abdul Rahman (55) from Pleret Bantul and Sugiono (43) from Minggir, Sleman.
