YOGYAKARTA – Globalization so far is responded in various ways by the community. There are positive responses, but some people are actually afraid of globalization because relationships among states are no longer separated that sometimes it creates negative effects. As one way to show symptoms and evidence of the globalization from the simple things in daily life, the student of KKN PPM UGM Unit-95 along with the Institute of International Studies (IIS) UGM held Globalization Day on Saturday (21/8) in SMA N 1 Yogyakarta.
According to the PR of the event who is also student of International Relations class 2007, Hasby Sirajudin, the Globalization Day presented international and local cultures in education and entertainment forms.
"The event consists of exhibition of various study centers of foreign and local cultural community. There are 12 participating booths," Hasby said.
He added that those foreign study centers provide information about scholarships, language courses and their culture. It shows the cultural closeness between countries due to the globalization.
Meanwhile, IIS Director Ahmad Hanafi Rais UGM, MPP added that on one hand, globalization may force a nation but on the other hand it can also empower the community. It depends on how people react to it.
Principal of SMA N 1 Yogyakarta, Drs.Zamroni, M.Pd.I, on the occasion also welcomed the event (Globalization Day). The activity was believed to be able to add insight to the teachers and students on how to respond to the rapid competition in this globalization. "Teachers and students can certainly take advantage of this student service learning activity, especially how to respond the intense competition," Zamroni explained.
In line with this, the Head of Education Office of Yogyakarta, Drs.Syamsuri, MM, emphasized that the event could be conducted sustainably. In his view, globalization must not be excessively responded. Moreover, not all foreign cultures are bad. "Do not respond excessively. Not all foreign culture is bad, isn’t it? For example, cellphones are useful means of communication," Syamsuri said.
In the event, globalization module and magazine were also launched. Globalization module will later be used as learning modules for high school students in grade 12, especially on civics subject. Some schools which have previously been used as pilot project of the modules of globalization include SMA N 1 Yogyakarta, SMA International Budi Mulia II, and SMA N 1 Wonosari.
