Universitas Gadjah Madain Academic Year 2010/2011 receives as many as 2601 new students of graduate level. Of the total number, 2047 are students of S2 level and 554 are S3 level. They came from 256 districts/cities and 34 of them are from abroad.
According to Director of Academic Administration, Dr. Ir. Budi Prasetyo Widyobroto, DEA., DESS, that number will continue to grow, considering that UGM until today is still conducting the registration process of graduate program, especially for the non-regular courses. "This number will increase by around 800-900. Effective from September 2, 2010, at 9:00 pm, Academic Year 2010/2011, Universitas Gadjah Mada has received 2601 new Graduate School students," he said on Thursday (2/9) at the inaugural lecture of the program.
The percentages of the students based on gender are relatively balanced. A total of 48.07% are male students and 51.93% are female. "Based on the funding source, this year those who finance them independently or outside the institution of Higher Education (Dikti) reached 70%, 53% finance themselves, whereas those who received BPPS scholarship is 29.65%," said Budi in Grha Sabha Pramana.
In front of the new students, Budi reminded that UGM in the first year of study will conduct academic evaluation. If the students do not reach the requirements, then they are requested to resign, because UGM does not apply drop out policy. Specifically, he reminded that BPPS scholarship recipients are not allowed to take leave. Therefore, in the process of taking courses they must have a study assignment letter issued by the Employees Bureau of the National Education Ministry. "Please my new students’ friends to compete actively over funds provided by the Directorate General of Higher Education, such as doctoral research program Grant, sandwich courses and programs of other competition from other funding sources. Please be diligent and industrious to look for such information and the Academic Administration Directorate is ready to help,“ he solicited.
Meanwhile, the Rector, Prof. Ir. Sudjarwadi, M. Eng., Ph.D, thanked the new students for choosing UGM as the place to gain knowledge. Toward them are expected to always understand and apply the UGM values during this time. "These values are the Pancasila and science. From the scientific keywords, there are nine other keywords as explanation. But, I wanted to tell you only three points related to scientific values. That we have an obligation, that is developing and applying science for civilization, utility and happiness," the Rector said.
He said that the expected happiness is not only happiness for yourself, but this can be dedicated to the nation and humanity. Therefore, the new students are able to strengthen UGM in order to serve the interests of the nation and the prosperity of the nation, as stated in the vision of UGM. "As for my dream, I imagine if the students graduated later on, of course they would give benefit of improving welfare. Besides to themselves and their family, they are expected to provide prosperity impacts to this nation, because today there are many Indonesian citizens who are truly less fortunate than us, "he added.
In his message, the Rector expected the new students to always hold to the UGM values. Therefore, in the study orientation the students can start thinking about such things, and try to spread happiness to the people who are less fortunate. "There are still many residents that have not been lucky enough to study up to a high level. Meanwhile, a developed nation is a country that is very much determined by its educated citizens," he concluded.
In addition to the university and faculty leadership, the Board of Trustees, Academic Senate and the Council of Professors also attended the event. Dr. Anggito Abimanyu, a lecturer of the Faculty of Economics and Business, conveyed a scientific oration entitled Development of Islamic Economics: Alternative or Necessity?.
