Various biodiversity in Indonesia is still very open to be developed. The varieties of biological diversity in this country are not yet widely known, let alone to be utilized.
Biological diversity has not been widely studied by biology, which is the basic science, thus important to the development of other applied sciences. "Biology is the basic science, thus important to the development of other applied sciences. Unfortunately, there has not been a lot of biodiversity being studied and is still less developed," said UGM Biology lecturer, Dr. Suwarno Hadisusanto, who is also chairman of the National Seminar on Biology 2010, accompanied by Dra. Rarastoeti Pratiwi, M.Sc., Ph.D., from the Scientific Section, at the Faculty of Biology, UGM, on Friday (24/9).
He gave an example of the type of orchid plants and tubers, such as Uwi and bananas, that have not been developed. Related to this phenomenon, the National Seminar on Biology is to be held under the theme Biology Perspectives in Biological Resource Management from 24 – 25 September 2010.
The National seminar that is held in the outline of the Lustrum XI Faculty of Biology is at the same time to release to retirement three UGM Professor of the Faculty of Biology, namely Prof. Dr. Jusup Subagja (Professor of Ecology), Prof. Dr. Mammed Sagi, M.S. (Professor of Animal Embryology), and Prof. Dr. Issirep Soemardi (Professor of Anatomy of Plants).
In his speech, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Dr. Retno Peni Sancayaningsih, M.Sc., said the three professors have been contributing their work, both in the writing of books, research, and mentoring students of S-1, S-2, and S-3. The professors also successfully developed their knowledge in the field of histology and embryology of animals, ecology, as well as anatomy and embryology of plants. "A professor is the highest position a person could achieve in education, as evidence of scientific development in their field and lecturer for their students," Peni said.
Before the seminar, a talk show is conducted to commemorate the dedication of the retired professors’, hosted by Prof. Sutiman Bambang Sumitro, D.Sc., who also graduated from the Faculty of Biology, UGM.
The main speaker in this seminar are former students of the professors, namely Prof. Dr. Revly Gerungan, M.Sc. (State University of Manado), a former student of Prof. Issirep, Prof. Okid Parama Astirin, M.S. (UNS), a former student of Prof. Jusup Subagja, Dr. Suharjono, M.S. (Universitas Brawijaya Malang), and Kombespol Drs. Siswanto (alumnus who is currently the Head of the Central Java Police Forensic Laboratory).
The next session was the presentation of 62 scientific papers (of the incoming 178 papers) that are carried out in parallel of five science fields groups of biodiversity, environmental biology, biomedicine, bio-molecular genetics and microbiology. Along with the seminar, 36 posters (of 76 incoming posters) are on display as an information result of research and development of science today.
