BANTUL (KU) – About 30 medical students performed community service by providing health care and free medical treatment in Srimartani Village, Piyungan, Bantul, Saturday (30/10). About a hundred residents who are farmers and construction workers had their health checked. "Most people who came are adults and elder people," said Dimas Wirawan, coordinator of Medical Action Week.
Residents came for general check-up, ranging from blood pressure check, measurement of body weight and height. In addition, their level of blood sugar was also examined for free. They also received health education about healthy and clean lifestyle. "After the check up, we provide free milk," Bima said.
Bima explained the health service activity this time involved two doctors assisted by students. "All the medicines are given from the supply of medical aid team of students," he said.
Community service program is regularly held every year, while for Srimartani Village it is the second time. In fact, this village has been guided by the Faculty’s students in health care. In this village, there are 13 hamlets. "In some hamlets, there are people affected by chikungunya," he said.
Bima conveyed that in this health service activity, he targets at about 100-200 people. Not a few of them suffer from hypertension and diabetes mellitus. "Most of them complained of frequent headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and hypertension," he said.
Head of Kwasen Hamlet, Srimartani Village, Awali (56), welcomed this health service program. According to Awali, citizens’ enthusiasm is very good, marked by numerous residents who came. "People’s enthusiasm is good enough for this activity," he said.
He said that in his hamlet, there are 363 family, mostly farmers and construction workers. A third of residents are poor, even some of them are unable to seek health treatment for certain diseases because they do not get health insurance service.
