BULAKSUMUR (KU) – To build student’s awareness about the environment, Geography Study Club (GSC), Faculty of Geography UGM has hosted GESTURE (Geography Student Creativity Week) that took the theme of Socio-Ecological Dynamics of Student in Student City in Young Intellectuals’ Perspective, GESTURE includes English Debate Competition, English Speech Competition and Scientific Paper Writing Competition.
Deputy Dean for Student Affairs and Cooperation, Dr. Lutfi Muta’ali, S.Si., M.T., said that highschools students in Yogyakarta participated in the competitions held on Sunday (14/11). This showed the big attention given by the students in the province to their environmental conditions. “They can convey their ideas and thoughts well to the public. This potential should be accommodated and developed so that the brilliant ideas would not stop here at GESTURE but also applicable in the community," Lutfi Muta’ali said in the release sent out to journalists on Tuesday (16/11).
According to Lutfi, students as young intellectuals are demanded to be more aware and care about environmental conditions and changes. All information received by the community and new technologies that keep emerging will surely affect people’s interaction with the environment in terms of ecology and socio-cultural phenomenon. “Through their intellectual capabilities, students are considered as able to have critical stance on these changes and respond wisely. At a time like this, their contribution is very much expected in taking critical opinion about the environmental conditions and changing them to the better,” he explained.
The result of the GESTURE competition for English Debate: first winner: team from SMA Negeri 9 Yogyakarta, second and third winners: SMA Stella Duce II Yogyakarta and MA Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. For the English Speech, first winner: Indriani Pratiwi from SMA Negeri 2 Yogyakarta, second and third winners: Vincensia Ariane Avianti from SMA Stella Duce II Yogyakarta and Monica Daru Murti from SMA Stella Duce II Yogyakarta.
For Scientific Writing Paper competition, the first winner is MAN 3 Yogyakarta with a paper entitled A Shift in Functional Value of Environmentally-Friendly Horsecart in the Student City. The second winner is SMA Negeri 8 Yogyakarta with the title Suitablity of Sand from Gendol River as Construction Material and third winner is SMA Kolese de Britto with the title The Influence of "Ciblon" Tradition on Clean Environment of Code River.
