Center for Information and Communication Technology Services (PPTIK) UGM in cooperation with the Ministry of Research and Technology and Blender Indonesia held a workshop of Blender by presenting 3D animation movie entitled Blender Hebring and discussion of SINTEL Open Movie – behind the scenes. The event at PPTIK UGM presented Hizkia Subiyantoro (Hizaro) from Blender Indonesia.
Hizaro on this occasion demonstrated the blender user interface. He also introduces the Blender Game Engine (BGE), along with the demo and Hebring animation movie that is created using the Blender.
Hizaro described that as an open source program, Blender is a simple, free, and quite small software, not as big as others. "The size is small compared to the commercial softwares. The size of Blender is 20 megabytes, a commercial software equivalent to one DVD ranging from 2-4 gigabytes," he said in Laboratory of PPTIK UGM on Monday (22/11).
Blender has the advantage compared with the previous software. When Into Deskmaya, Auto Desk 3 dsmax, and Light Wave XXI use the mouse more, Blender can use the mouse and keyboard.
In addition to fulfilling the needs of interior design, architecture, realistic cartoon film/ movie animation, the Blender program can be used for gaming and video editing. "It is just that up until now the user is still limited to hobbyists," he said.
SINTEL Open Movie is a 3D animation processing software. The project was intentionally developed to improve the ability of Blender as the primary software that evolved from the old version of 2.49 to the new version 2.5.
Among the Free Open Source Software (FOSS), Blender is phenomenal. After already tested by two previous open movies (Elephants Dream and Big Buck Bunny as well as the open game YO! Franky), Blender experienced significant growth in its ability for professional production. "As multi-function software, its presence in the community made Blender more reliable because it is developed by many developers from around the world," he said.
Evidence of Hebring’s short films is the one made by the Main Studio Jakarta. This film has been released since 2007 and won numerous national awards, including INAICTA winner in 2008 & 2009. Currently, Hebring has reached its third release and is planned to be aired nationally as TV series. Hebring’s success is inseparable from Blender and online communities such as Kaskus, Facebook, and Blender Indonesia. The animators come together to develop this community with a series of workshops in several major cities in Indonesia, including one at UGM," he concluded.
