Yogyakarta- Indonesian Women Workers both in the country and abroad are vulnerable to abuses both physically and mentally. Related to this condition, Center for Women Studies UGM in cooperation with Council of Professors plan to hold a workshop to respond to the condition on 29 December 2010. The result of workshop will be recommended to the government as input of policy in sending women labors abroad in the future.
That was said by the Head of the Center, Dra. Djoharwinarlien, S.U., to reporters at her office, Monday (13/12). She was accompanied by workshop committee, Prof. Dr. Agustinus Supriyanto, and researcher of the Center, Dra. Sudarwati.
Winarlien said that UGM Center for Women Studies that cares about women and children protection gives serious attention on the problems faced by Indonesian women workers. “Day by day, the condition of our women workers is getting worse, starting from being tortured and abused to living under the bridge,” Winarlien said.
The general objective of Professional education is to prepare the students to be citizens who are faithful and pious to God, having the spirit of the Pancasila (the five basic principles of the Republic of Indonesia), possessing a high personal integrity, open and perceptive to changes and the development of science, technology, art, and the problems that the society is facing, especially the ones related with their field of mastery as well as possessing the ability to apply their knowledge to a certain field.

This member of faculty of Faculty of Law UGM also regretted the government’s weak bargaining position that is caused by the need to get a job abroad, not based on the need or demand from the countries in need. “Morever, the government has less goodwill on women workers’ protection,” he ended.
