YOGYAKARTA – One of the parasitic diseases that remain a public health problem is intestinal infection, especially those transmitted by soil. The Nematodes group is called geohelminths. Infection with geohelminths is still a disease of high prevalence in the tropics among low socio-economic communities in the countryside.
There are three types of Geohelminths that cause health problems in society. The three types of groups of worms include roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), whip worm (Trichuris trichiura) and hookworms (Hookworm).
Based on the research of Drs. Melianus Salakory, M. Kes., the population of geohelminths’s Eggs and larvae is quite diverse based on the structure of the soil type and soil wetness level as well as the habit to maintain personal hygiene and environment sanitary that affect the Geohelminths infection.
Melianus explained that the results of his research on the prevalence of geohelmiths on the island of Ambon found that there are differences in the prevalence of Geohelminths infection in the 7 land units in rural residential areas on the island of Ambon. According to him, the differences are influenced by the dynamics of eggs growth, Geohelminths infectious larvae in the land and culture population.
"The differences in the prevalence of infection in 7 geohelminths land units with the rural residential area of the island Ambon, and influence of the dynamics of eggs growth, geohelminths infectious larvae on the land, as well as personal sanitation and hygiene habits of the population," said Melianus in an open examination to obtain his doctorate at the Faculty of Medicine on Tuesday (21/12).
