Dean of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM, Prof. Dr. drh. Bambang Sumiarto, inaugurated 120 new veterinary surgeons. The inauguration at Grha Sabha Pramana on Tuesday (21/12) was witnessed by parents and Chairperson of Indonesian Veterinarian Association, Dr. Wiwiek Bagja.
As many as 120 new vets were inaugurated comprising 34 male and 86 female vets with average time of study 5 years 8 months and length of study of professional level 1 year and 4 months. The best graduate was Ayu Kartika Indah, achieving GPA 3,91 while the youngest graduate was Fahmi Rihandani, graduating at 22 years 11 months 5 days of age.
“In this opportunity, I would like to give an advice for the new vets to always be committed in science and technology development in veterinary area and highly respect professionalism as vets,” Bambang Sumiarto said delivering his speech.
As a respected profession, new vets are expected to always be professional and have global outlook to realize healthy and prosperous society (Manusya mriga satwa sewaka). The new vets are expected to participate in developing Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM through ‘Strengthening of Alumni Role of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM’. “It is because the quality development of a unversity very depends on all stakeholders, including the alumni,”
In supporting life aspects in the era of globalization, one thing that needs to be met is inteconnectivity. In this condition, alumni network have a very significant role.
Such network is not only a room for ceremonial events and reunion but more than that. It is needed so that the relationship between alumni and universities goes well. “This alumni network should be able to respond to the need, particularly employment for new alumni,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Wiwiek Bagja, said in the past 3-4 years, vets are highly demanded, they are very much required as they can work in many areas.
Wiwiek said, however, these new vets are considered as moving jobs as they are easily tempted by better salaries and facilities. “Therefore, I remind you not to move jobs just because of facilities and salary. You should maintain the image of a vet based on the prevalent oath and ethical code, she said.
Now, this Faculty of UGM has 3,778 alumni who work in different areas. Not a few of them have strategic position.
