UGM won the second place in the Regional Student Sports Week (Pomda) 2011 with 18 gold, 23 silver and 25 bronze medals. The grand prize was achieved by the team from Yogyakarta State University who collected 49 gold medals, 36 silver medals and 21 bronze medals while the third position jointly occupied by the National Development University of Yogyakarta, and University of Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta with the acquisition 4 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 8 bronze medals.
Dr. Ir. Saiful Rochdyanto, M.S., the supervisor of the UGM sports unit of student activity expressed his joy over the achievements of UGM team in the Sports Week 2011. Although not bringing home the overall championship title, the UGM student athletes have given their all to provide maximum performance at the competition.
"This result is better, there is an increase compared with the last one two years ago. We hope there will be a lot of UGM athletes get selected to represent Yogyakarta in the 2011National Student Sports Week," he said when contacted by phone on Tuesday (5/4).
Saiful said further, several fields, such as swimming, chess, and basketball, show quite prideful achievement with many medals. "This is beyond our target," he explained.
Saiful added, in the future he hopes the university will facilitate the team better for the Pomda preparation to achieve maximum results by concentrating on the particular favorite fields of sports.
At the event UGM sent 150 students who competed in 9 sports. Here are the complete results of medals achieved by the UGM team. The Badminton team successfully gained a bronze medal; Chess 3 gold medals, 2 bronze medals; Athletics 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals, 8 bronze medals; Pool 9 gold medals, 17 silver medals and 8 bronze medals; Basketball 2 gold medals; Karate 2 gold medals, 4 bronze medals, and Pencak Silat one gold medal, 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.
The Sports Week was held from December 1 to 31 March 2011 involving 25 universities in the province for 10 branches of sport. The sports contested are athletics, basket ball, volleyball, badminton, chess, futsal, karate, pencaksilat, swimming, and sepaktakraw.
Pomda is a student sports competition at the regional level which is held every 2 years. This event is conducted to select outstanding student-athletes and potential athletes that will represent the province in the National Student Sports Week (Pomnas) in the Riau Islands from September 25 -1 October
