Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Korea University (KU) cooperate in research in the field of tropical forest and forest for food in order to address the impacts of global climate change and tropical forest rehabilitation. This was announced by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochammad Na’iem, M. Agr. Sc., on the sidelines of the Workshop on Global Climate Change and Tropical Forest Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Forestry on Tuesday (21/6). Attending the workshop, among others, are two researchers from the Korea University, Prof. Yow Han Son and Professor. W. K. Lee.
Na’iem said that Korean researchers are interested in studying tropical forest research and forest presence in food procurement research. For tropical forest research, the forest type with a very complete ecosystem does not exist in Korea. Therefore, the Korean researchers are interested to cooperate in this research field. "For the opportunities of cooperation with Korea, we will cooperate in biotechnology, the use of remote searching monitoring, and Geographic Information System for forest management and global climate change," he said.
Furthermore, the forest presence in food procurement research is based on the global issue of food crisis facing all countries in the world. "The deforestation led to the decreasing availability and security of food," he said.
Na’iem said that cooperation with Korea University has been carried out since a year ago. In addition to research, the planned cooperation will also be carried out in the form of exchange of lecturers and students.
