Hery Trianto, Marketing and Sales Director of the Bisnis Indonesia Group and an alumnus of UGM, shared his experiences in the media field during a briefing session for 1,387 postgraduate, specialist, and sub-specialist program graduands on Tuesday (Apr. 23) at Grha Sabha Pramana.
According to Trianto, one key to personal development is avoiding complacency at any point in one’s career. Lifelong learning is essential, even after entering the workforce. The biggest challenge after completing education is implementing the acquired knowledge in the workplace.
In the era of digitalization and information media, which has brought about numerous disruptions, there is a growing demand for workers with digital competencies.
“We often get trapped in our comfort zones. Sometimes, we must step out of those zones to seize new opportunities. For instance, media is very important right now. Feel free to actualize yourself, but don’t forget to be cautious,” Trianto explained.
Trianto shared three keys to enhancing competencies and succeeding professionally: mastering networking, communication skills, and a strong fighting spirit. He pointed out that many alumni excel academically but lack communication skills, which significantly impacts their career development.
“Interesting ideas and innovations may not be executed well due to poor communication skills. This skill is closely related to strengthening networks in the workplace,” Trianto noted.
He emphasized the importance of understanding that the world has entered a post-truth era, where the line between truth and falsehood is blurred. Society is flooded with information yet cannot filter it effectively. Academics play a crucial role in verifying and filtering information for the public.
“UGM alumni can take on this role cautiously, especially on social media. As members of the UGM Alumni Family (Kagama), UGM alumni carry the university’s good name in all their actions,” he said.
Trianto highlighted that networking within Kagama is essential for gaining experience and building personal and professional relationships.
“UGM alumni contributions continue through various programs such as donations, grants, seminars, and Kagama scholarships. This commitment needs to be maintained to benefit students, UGM, and fellow alumni,” he added.
Dr. R.A. Belinda Arunarwati Margono, Coordinator of the Arts and Culture Development Department at Kagama, mentioned that the association is a gathering place for alumni and comprises various communities connecting alumni.
“In the future, this bond is expected to continue as a home and a place for alumni to work,” she hoped.
Dr. Arie Sujito, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni, urged alumni to remember their alma mater and appreciate knowledge development through tangible actions that benefit society.
“I hope this alumni bond remains strong and we stay connected,” he concluded.
