The SENYUMIN application by the UGM Vocational College recently received the award for the best innovation at the Jakarta Innovation Awards (JIA) 2023, organized by the Regional Development Planning Agency of Jakarta in September 2023.
The application is an AI-based application used for self-screening the dental health of schoolchildren.
This innovation results from collaboration between lecturers and students of the Software Engineering Technology program at the UGM Vocational College and the Kebayoran Baru Community Health Center in South Jakarta.
The Kebayoran Baru team, consisting of Dina Evariyana Bangun, MD; dentists Dinithya Hyta, Dewi Arifahni, Arlan Akbari, and Ikasari; Atik; and Sapta, has been developing this collaborative innovation since 2021.
They collaborated with the UGM team led by Muhammad Fakhrurrifqi, Dwi Noviandaru, Rizal, and others.
This innovation, which improves the community’s dental health, was fully supported by the Jakarta Provincial Health Office and Tresia Arthati, MD, the head of the Kebayoran Baru Community Health Center.
Previously, this innovation received a Diamond Award as the first winner at the 2022 Indonesia Health Innovation Awards (IHIA) in the healthcare quality category.
It also won 1st place in the 2022 Jakarta Provincial Level Quality Convention. It received a Diamond Award at the 26th National Quality and Productivity Meeting in Lombok.
Muhammad Fakhrurrifqi expressed that this award is one way for the UGM Software Engineering Technology program to show its appreciation for tackling research challenges in applied science.
He hopes that more cross-disciplinary research collaborations like this will be conducted to improve the welfare and health of the wider community, given the significant gap between knowledge on campus and the application of technology in society.
“The insights from colleagues and students from the Independent Cross-Disciplinary Project organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Informatics greatly helped accelerate the development of this application,” said Fakhrurrifqi.
The benefits of this innovation have expanded with the support of the South Jakarta Health Office, which has replicated the innovation across all Community Health Centers in South Jakarta. They will continue to be expanded to other areas in the province.
Using artificial intelligence in dental screening makes it easy for children and parents to conduct self-examinations to quickly and safely detect dental abnormalities.
Parents or teachers at school can use the application, accessible through their own devices, to actively monitor the child’s dental health, help fill out the application, and send pictures.
The system will analyze the images and display dental abnormalities. The analysis results and recommendations will be sent to the school’s parents or teachers.
The effective use of technology and strong collaboration in developing the SENYUMIN app has become a powerful asset in the digital service transformation, especially in dental health, to support the nation’s progress and the welfare and health of the community.
