The UGM Accounting program is one of three undergraduate programs at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM). The other two are Management and Economics.
The UGM Accounting program stands out among prospective students who aspire to join UGM. It consistently ranks among the top five programs in the social humanities cluster, making it a highly sought-after choice in every UGM entrance selection pathway.
The number of applicants in 2023 was significant, reaching 5,620 people. This program, with its selectivity rate of 1:33, offers a unique opportunity for only the most dedicated and talented students, accepting only one applicant out of every 33.
It is known for its strong academic reputation and continuous maintenance of educational quality. This is evidenced by the program’s Excellent accreditation from the Independent Accreditation Agency for Economics, Management, Business, and Accounting (LAMEMBA).
The program is nationally accredited and one of the programs at FEB UGM accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). In the 2024 QS WUR by Subjects, this program ranks in 151-200 positions worldwide.
Dr. Vogy Gautama Buanaputra, the Head of the UGM Accounting Program, highlights one of the program’s key advantages: the opportunity for students to gain international exposure. This is facilitated through exchange programs and double degrees with over 40 partner universities worldwide.
This can be achieved through exchange programs or double degrees with more than 40 partner universities abroad.
“Through these programs, students have the opportunity to gain different learning experiences and expand their networks internationally,” said Dr. Buanaputra in a statement to reporters on Thursday (Apr. 18).
The program is also part of the Partnership of Asian Management Schools (PAMS), which offers short academic programs that allow students to take courses at external campuses.
Since 2020, FEB UGM has collaborated with four partner universities: Woosong University, Foreign Trade University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
“In this program, the Accounting program at FEB UGM offers courses on Digital Accounting Transformation,” he explained.
In strengthening learning materials, Dr. Buanaputra and his team have introduced a new curriculum integrating materials on technology and information systems. Students must take seven courses, equivalent to 21 semester credit units (credits).
The materials offered include Information Systems and Technology, Accounting Information Systems, Systems Analysis and Design, R Programming, Digital Business, Data Analytics, and Enterprise Resource Planning.
Dr. Buanaputra emphasized that strengthening the curriculum with information technology aims to provide graduates with adequate preparation on the subject and its relevance to accounting so that they can have a broader role in national and international business and non-business organizations.
“This step is taken in response to the continuously evolving needs of the times and addressing the challenges of disruption,” he explained.
Dr. Buanaputra mentioned that the development of information technology, especially artificial intelligence and information systems, has changed the workforce landscape in various sectors, including the accounting world.
Technological advancements have changed the way accounting works, and the presence of AI can automate and significantly simplify accounting tasks that were previously done purely by humans.
“This condition expands the potential roles of accounting graduates in the workforce, which can increase job opportunities or professions for accounting graduates,” he revealed.
Hilda Bhakti Fahrezi, an Accounting 2022 student at FEB UGM, admitted that studying in the program was one of her best decisions. She felt that the offered learning allowed her to develop her abilities and introduced her to new feelings and experiences.
“I am exposed to many activities, ranging from workshops, committees, and organizations within the faculty, to job offers that helped me improve soft and hard skills,” she said.
Meanwhile, Zaid Alfarizi, an Accounting 2021 student at FEB UGM, mentioned that during his studies at the faculty, he gained many insights beyond materials from books. This is because many lecturers at FEB UGM have professional experience outside the classroom, providing new insights and knowledge.
Not to mention lectures-cum-practioners at the faculty who provide real-world information from the working world. Alfarizi added that FEB UGM also offers greater opportunities for students to gain experience from outside the campus through internships or student exchanges.
