Laksamana UGM 2023, a competition in the field of communication science for high school students in Indonesia, is once again organized by the students of the Department of Communication Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).
The event commenced with an online seminar titled “Commsultation: Unveiling The World of Communication Studies,” held on Friday (7/7) in two sessions.
The first session featured keynote speakers, while the second was conducted in breakout rooms with speakers from Communication Science students.
In addition to providing information about the Communication Science program at UGM to participants from high schools across Indonesia, the seminar aimed to inspire the participants’ enthusiasm for the upcoming competition.
Zainuddin Muda Z. Monggilo, a lecturer at the Department of Communication Science, was the main speaker and discussed various topics.
He explained the history of the Communication Science program and introduced its characteristics and curriculum, job opportunities for graduates, and digital communication channel, Dikom UGM.
Monggilo elaborated on the entry pathways to the Communication Science program at UGM, ranked as Indonesia’s 10th most preferred program.
As one of the 6th most competitive departments at UGM, prospective undergraduate students can enter the program through various entry pathways, including the academic excellence-based entrance selection (SNBP), national entrance test (SNBT), and independent admission test (UM-CBT).
According to him, producing graduates with solid foundations is crucial, and thus introducing the program’s characteristics and curriculum to these aspiring undergrad students is highly relevant.
“With the tagline Crafting Well-informed Society, the department aims to equip learners with critical, creative, and ethical thinking skills. With these, they are prepared to hold a strategic position upon graduation and contribute positively to society or the workforce,” said the lecturer.
Graduates in Communication Science have numerous career options, from content creators, writers, public relations or communication officers, advertising professionals, and journalists to reporters. Beyond that, graduates can also work as researchers and academics or hold ministerial or leadership positions in the country.
“What makes studying Communication Science at UGM appealing is the opportunity to receive lectures from renowned practitioners and public figures who are competent in their respective fields, as demonstrated by the recent involvement of celebrity Prilly Latuconsina,” he added.
The committee head R.A. Aishalda Kuslardiyani stated that the “commsultation” event serves as a consultation space for high school students who are curious and want to learn more about the dynamics of studying at the Department of Communication Science.
Communication Student Corps Chair Muhammad Nadif Fajar Ramadhan shared similar sentiments, stating that the “commsultation” event helps participants become better acquainted with Communication Science.
Additionally, Dr. Nyarwi Ahmad, Chair of the Undergraduate Communication Science Program, appreciated the organization of this event.
He emphasized that the event showcases the creativity of UGM’s Communication Science students and prepares prospective students to become more self-aware and familiar with the Department of Communication Science.
