A team of students from the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM) achieved national recognition by winning first place in the 2024 HSBC Business Case Competition, held from April 20-24, 2024, in Jakarta.
The team “Tim Youngster” included Nathaniel Christanto Kuniardi and Gildas Sebastian Satriatama from the Accounting program, Adena Laksita Paramesti from the Management program, and Cynthia Aretha Pratiwi A from the Economics program.
Faculty advisor R. Muhammad Fajri and mentors Rocky Adiguna, Okkie Putriani, and Arizona Mustika Rini guided them.
In this prestigious business competition, Tim Youngster outperformed 17 other teams from various universities, including ITB and UI, which secured second and third place, respectively.
The team leader, Nathaniel Kuniardi, attributed their success to the hard work and thorough preparation that began in late February 2024.
The team conducted independent practice sessions and received mentoring from FEB UGM’s Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU), focusing on public speaking, case analysis, and financial understanding.
In addition to support from CSDU, the team also benefited from the guidance of previous FEB UGM participants in the HSBC Business Case Competition and mentorship from HSBC managers who are FEB UGM alumni, including Irine Wiguno, Herani Hermawan, and Yudhi Permadi.
“We are very grateful for the extraordinary support from FEB UGM, from mentoring to providing facilities for practice,” Kuniardi said.
During the five-day competition, Adena Paramesti, another team member, explained that all teams were challenged to solve various business cases from renowned global companies. Each team had to recommend solutions to the issues presented.
“There were four rounds in this competition, and in the final round, UGM competed against ITB and UI. We are very grateful that UGM’s team emerged as the winner,” she explained.
Winning first place nationally has allowed Tim Youngster to represent Indonesia in the Asia Pacific regional business competition, which will be held in Hong Kong at the end of May 2024.
Regarding their preparation for the upcoming Asia Pacific competition, Paramesti mentioned that the team would undergo even more rigorous and thorough preparation to bring honor to UGM and Indonesia on the global stage.
“We will prepare ourselves better and work even harder,” she said.
Muhammad Fajri expressed his pride in Tim Youngster’s achievement. Despite having only about 1.5 months to prepare, the team effectively integrated various aspects to address business cases, including presentation, public speaking, and case analysis.
Fajri emphasized that they would prepare the team even more thoroughly for the regional Asia Pacific competition, focusing on enhancing presentation efficiency, deepening analytical skills, and providing solutions with real-world impacts in business management case studies.
HSBC mentors Herani Hermawan and Irine Wiguno remarked that the team’s victory resulted from their hard work, which was greatly supported by the guidance of their academic advisors. The mentoring provided by HSBC focused on logical reasoning, comprehensive communication, and presentation skills.
“The mentoring support and experience from previous HSBC Business Case Competition alumni at FEB UGM were beneficial in preparing Tim Youngster to perform and present better,” said Herani Hermawan.
