Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) organized a General Lecture for Graduate Students on Wednesday (September 27) as part of the orientation activities for approximately 8,403 new students.
This number includes doctoral, master’s, professional, specialist, and subspecialist program students who enrolled in the even semester of 2022/2023 and the odd semester of 2023/2024.
During this general lecture, the Rector of UGM, Professor Ova Emilia, delivered a keynote speech about UGM’s values, including its history, vision, mission, and identity.
“This university is the first university established by a sovereign Indonesia, a testament that Indonesia can educate its people to be intelligent and not dependent on colonial powers. At UGM, we must have a spirit of independence, unity, sacrifice, sincerity, and nation-building,” said the rector.
Professor Emilia also highlighted various achievements and successes that UGM’s academic community has attained at regional, national, and international levels. UGM, she noted, consistently has the most outstanding student achievements among all universities in Indonesia.
“UGM consistently ranks first in student achievements in Indonesia for several years. We are proud of our students at UGM, and therefore, I hope you all can be confident,” she stated.
In addition to the achievements of its students, UGM, as a higher education institution, has received favorable ratings from various ranking organizations. For instance, in the QS World University Ranking, UGM is ranked 231st globally and holds the top position in Indonesia.
“Ranking is not the most important thing, but it is a source of pride for us that external organizations recognize our hard work. With the many postgraduate students, many works such as publications and innovations will further advance this institution,” the rector added.
For the even semester of 2022/2023 and the odd semester of 2023/2024, UGM welcomed 717 doctoral students, 4,993 master’s students, 2,190 professional program students, 445 specialist program students, and 58 subspecialist program students.
“In principle, UGM facilitates various learning activities better and encourages a comfortable learning tradition. Your studies should not cause stress, and we hope your studies go smoothly. You need to develop your concerns both in and outside the classroom,” said the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni, Dr. Arie Sujito.
The orientation activities were divided into a morning session consisting of a general lecture and an afternoon session introducing the graduate student associations.
In the morning session, there was a talk show titled “Implementing UGM Values through Various Fields of Study for Indonesia’s Glory,” followed by a discussion and Q&A.
The session featured four speakers: Professor Wihana Kirana Jaya, Professor Suharko, Professor Gandes Retno Rahayu, MD, and Professor Mochammad Maksum.
“Use this forum as part of our initial introduction to building engagement in your studies,” Dr. Arie Sujito concluded.
