The UGM Faculty of Philosophy (UGM) organized the 2024 Philo Run on Sunday (Nov. 24), a unique program that combines physical activity with philosophical reflection (Nov. 24).
Over 300 participants from various backgrounds, including students, lecturers, running communities, and the general public, attended this activity, which was part of the World Philosophy Day celebration under the theme “Philosophy of Well-Being.”
Held on the UGM campus grounds, Philo Run introduced a different concept from typical running events.
Along the 5-kilometer route, participants were presented with philosophical quotes and reflections, which encouraged them to contemplate the meaning of true well-being physically, mentally, and spiritually.
“Well-being is not just about material things but about living wisely. Through running, we are invited to reflect on the connection between physical activity and mental health, as harmony between spiritual and physical well-being is the foundation of a good life,” said the Dean of Philosophy UGM, Dr. Siti Murtiningsih.
In this run, participants were encouraged to enjoy each step of the journey rather than running solely to achieve the fastest time.
As such, there was no winners’ podium, maximum time limit, or cut-off time for runners, and every participant received a medal upon crossing the finish line, regardless of their recorded time.
According to Dr. Murtiningsih, the event theme, “Running for Well-being—A Philosophical Journey,” is highly relevant to modern life, which often leads to stress, alienation, and loss of meaning.
“Philosophy offers a space for reflection to understand what truly matters in life, which is happiness rooted in meaningfulness, harmonious relationships with others, and inner peace,” she explained.
In addition to general participants, several prominent figures, academics, and university partners attended the event, adding to the lively atmosphere.
For the participants, Philo Run provided an enjoyable running experience and served as a space for reflection and dialogue. It allowed them to appreciate the small things in life and maintain a balance between body and mind.
This event was one of the highlights of the World Philosophy Day (WPD) series, which was organized by Philosophy UGM in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Jakarta.
The WPD activities will continue with seminars, debates, and philosophical podcasts until the end of November.
