The Doctoral Program in Geography was established in response to the growing demand for highly qualified human resources in geography to address increasingly complex global challenges, particularly in environmental management and sustainable development. The objective of this program is to produce graduates with doctoral qualifications who are recognized as “Experts in Geography” and are capable of demonstrating proficiency in understanding, developing, and integrating geographical concepts, theories, and methodologies in research management. Graduates are skilled in applying complex spatial, ecological, and regional approaches to problem-solving and possess practical international communication skills. To achieve this, the curriculum is designed with flexibility to accommodate students’ needs through both regular and research tracks, catering to educators, researchers, and professionals alike. Graduates of this program are awarded the doctoral degree (Dr.) and gain a competitive advantage in the professional world.

Key Strengths

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The ability to collaborate across disciplines in order to develop comprehensive solutions to environmental issues in development. The strong interaction between geography and other disciplines, such as natural sciences, socio-economic sciences, and the humanities, encourages multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to sustainability.
  • Joint Supervision and Double Degree Programs: Collaborative supervision of doctoral students with international partner institutions, resulting in graduates earning dual degrees.
  • Laboratory Facilities: Supported by comprehensive laboratory facilities, including the Hydrology and Environmental Climatology Laboratory, Environmental Geomorphology and Disaster Mitigation Laboratory, Population and Economic Resources Laboratory, Regional Studies Laboratory, Spatial Planning Laboratory, Cartography Laboratory, Remote Sensing Laboratory, and Geographic Information Systems Laboratory.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the Doctoral Program in Geography have career opportunities as academics, researchers, and professionals in both government and private institutions. They may work as lecturers at public or private universities, researchers in government or private research institutions, and professional staff in various agencies such as the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Regional Development Planning Agency (BAPPEDA), the National Land Agency (BPN), the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), mining companies, and private consulting firms.
