The scope of the Master’s Program in Urban Design includes spatial planning and design of urban built areas at the meso level, between Architecture (micro) and Urban and Regional Planning (macro), drawing on competencies from both and applying a research-based design approach and professional practice comprehensively in learning.
This graduate program offers a Master of Urban Design (MUD) degree that emphasizes logical, critical, systematic, and creative thinking, as well as professional skills and global competitiveness. These strengths are developed through research and innovative creative work aimed at addressing urban challenges. The curriculum provides two study pathways: course-based and research-based learning. Its approach to urban design is grounded in an understanding of the complexity of urban environmental issues across different countries, using these as precedents, while focusing primarily on case studies from Indonesian cities. These cities, shaped by their distinctive archipelagic context, require tailored and innovative design solutions suited to their unique characteristics.
The Urban Design Studio, at the core of the curriculum, serves as the primary platform for integrating real-world urban issues into the academic learning process. Knowledge is developed through a combination of classroom instruction and field-based research, with real-world urban environments serving as living laboratories for the Master’s Program in Urban Design. Insights gained from these experiences form the foundation for analytical work, leading to the synthesis of knowledge for problem-solving and the creation of built-environment design ideas.
The learning process engages a wide range of stakeholders, including local and national government bodies, industry practitioners in urban design and business, associations of urban design schools in Indonesia, and program alumni. Their involvement brings valuable perspectives and practical experience that extend beyond the academic realm. In addition, opportunities to join national and international competitions and collaborative studios expose students to teamwork and interaction across diverse social and cultural contexts.
Career opportunities for urban designers are broad, driven by the many regions in need of urban design expertise. Graduates equipped with the knowledge and perspective to advance sustainable, globally competitive cities in the Indonesian context can pursue paths as practitioners, academics, researchers, or policymakers in urban design.
The study period is four semesters or two years, with a minimum of 54 credits.
This Study Program is Accredited as Good from the Indonesian National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (BAN-PT)
