Indonesia today is facing the escalation of the number of population in the productive age (15 – 64 years old) called as the “the Demographic Bonus). As revealed by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the number of productive age in Indonesia 2015 reached 67, 3 per cent of the total 255, 45 million people. This trend will be predicted to reach a peak by 2030 in which the number of population in the productive age will increase by 68, 1 per cent of total 296, 4 million people. Meanwhile, the ratio of the dependence of people will reach the lowest number by 2035 by 0.6 per cent.
The demographic bonus occurred until 2035 brings two implications: positive and negative. In the positive perspective, it is certainly related to the high number of people in the productive age that can be the engine of development. Bloom et. al (1999) and Bloom and Finlay (2009) stated that the demography bonus has been enjoyed by some countries in the East Asia regions such as China, Japan, and Korea characterized with the high level of income per capita[1].
On the other hand, the negative implication can occur if the opportunity of the demographic bonus is not managed well. The increase of the population number will emerge some problems in which in economy sector the employment rate can be getting higher, in legal sector, it can trigger more crimes and in social context, it can stimulate the action of urbanization and other problems. In turn, they will be the prolonged burden of state as they are not able to be the engine of growth. As a consequence, they cannot contribute to the establishment of national savings.
For this, the International Conference is deemed essential to:
- Encourage the stakeholders to be the issues of the demographic bonus in the agenda of the national policy setting to the implementation phase in any levels either ministry or local.
- Synergize the role of the stakeholders in formulating the policy to be accurate, qualified and strategic.
- Open the opportunities for the young people to participate in the policy that will determine their destiny and future.
