Economic practices that are based on or influenced by Islamic values have been being part of the world economy since the seventh century. Despite their ups and downs, the practices have withstood the test of time as a robust fact.
Over the past few decades, the existence of economic practices based on or influenced by Islamic values has gained another momentum with the increasing popularity of Islamic financial industry, not only in Muslimmajority countries, but also in other countries with minor Muslim population. This is followed by the growing of Islamic business sector that include among others halal food and pharmaceutical industry, Islamic tourism and hospitality industry and Islamic fashion industry.
Many believe that promoting economic practices based on or influenced by Islamic values will help, not only Muslim societies but also other societies, enhance social welfare. However, this is a multifaceted and sensitive issue that requires comprehensive understandings on all aspects of the economy at global, national and local levels.
