The Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Professor Ova Emilia, officially opened the series of events for the 75th Anniversary and 15th Lustrum of UGM at Balairung on Friday (Jul. 12).
The opening ceremony symbolically marked the joining of four puzzle pieces of the Anniversary logo, representing faculty, students, committee members, and leadership. A healthy exercise session, sack races, foot races, and door prize giveaways also enlivened the event.
In her speech, the rector noted that at 75 years old, UGM is relatively old by human standards but still young for an institution. However, it is worth celebrating that UGM has reached this milestone. It reflects its long journey in developing excellent and competitive human resources to contribute to nation-building in various fields.
“For 75 years, UGM has remained committed to advancing knowledge and instilling national values and justice in all its members. UGM is a crucible for future leaders and nation-builders,” Rector Emilia said.
The rector mentioned that this year’s Anniversary theme, “Strengthening Nationalism and Building Civility,” reflects UGM’s commitment to maintaining unity and harmony by instilling the values of appreciating differences and preserving diversity.
“Differences should not be seen as something that divides us. Differences are a gift from God, encouraging us to respect and support one another,” she added.
Rector Emilia emphasized that UGM’s members and alumni must continuously nurture the spirit of nationalism while adhering to ethical and civilized standards to create an inclusive and humane society.
“Through this series of anniversary events, let us reinforce the spirit of nationalism and civility within the campus environment, enhancing knowledge and building synergy with partners and the community,” said the rector.
The Chair of the 75th Anniversary Committee, Dr. Arie Sujito, explained that the 75th Anniversary series will include various social activities, sports competitions, seminars, scientific workshops, awards for outstanding individuals, ethics lectures, alumni gatherings, and the peak celebration of the anniversary.
For him, the Anniversary activities are not merely routine but an inspiration to foster creativity and moral responsibility in nation-building. He believes that Indonesia now needs national solid consolidation.
Dr. Sujito added that the Anniversary and Lustrum celebrations serve as a moment to reflect on UGM’s long journey in nation-building, advancing innovation, and higher dedication to cultivating national spirit.
“This is realized by producing generations ready to face global challenges and contribute positively to the nation and society,” he concluded.
