Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is urging faculties and units to boost the number of publications related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This effort is part of UGM’s contribution to supporting Indonesia’s SDG targets at the university level and enhancing the university’s reputation through the THE Impact Ranking.
This initiative was conveyed by UGM Vice-Rector for Education and Teaching, Professor Wening Udasmoro, during the SDGs Training of Trainer (ToT) event at Soegondo Building, UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM), on Wednesday (Jun. 26).
Professor Udasmoro highlighted that UGM is a comprehensive university with a wealth of news sources related to SDG activities. Therefore, she encouraged increased publications related to the university’s tri-dharma activities, necessitating improved writing competencies among staff in faculties, schools, directorates, and units.
“UGM has activities related to sustainability, whether it’s about food, food development, cultural resilience, or even gender issues, so we need to publish these,” she stated.
According to the vice-rector, publications related to SDGs enhance UGM’s reputation and serve as references for other community groups and universities to support SDG targets.
“What we do related to sustainability can serve as a reference. This is our opportunity to inspire others with what we are doing,” she explained.
The Coordinator for SDGs at the UGM Quality Assurance and Reputation Unit (SPMRU UGM), Dr. Sentagi Sesotya Utami, mentioned that in the 2024 THE Impact Ranking, UGM’s coverage of 17 SDGs showed significant increases in 11 SDGs and decreases in 5 SDGs.
“There are 11 SDGs where we saw significant increases,” she said.
Dr. Utami elaborated that THE Impact Ranking placed UGM in the Top 100 globally for three SDGs: SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) at rank 66, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) at rank 56, and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) at rank 89.
UGM ranked 17th worldwide for SDG 1 (No Poverty) out of 1,093 universities. THE also ranked UGM between 101 and 200 globally for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
To improve THE Impact Ranking, UGM plans to promote publications and policies related to SDGs regarding research, teaching and learning, outreach, and governance.
