Hiri Island holds great potential as a prime tourism destination in Indonesia. Located north of Togolobe Harbor, the island offers captivating experiences.
From stunning natural landscapes to unique cultural richness, Hiri Island is a paradise for tourists eager to explore its beauty and distinct charm.
In a bid to preserve the island’s vibrant and diverse local culture, the UGM Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) team based in Togolobe Harbor will conduct the 2024 Hiri Island Culinary and Tourism Expo on Aug. 10, 2024, in Hiri Island, Ternate, North Maluku.
Themed “Hiri Lestari, Hiri Berseri,” the event reflects the high hopes of the people of Hiri Island.
“Hiri Lestari” emphasizes the importance of preserving the island’s cultural and environmental heritage amidst modernization, while “Hiri Berseri” represents the aspiration to create an atmosphere of happiness and vibrancy for the entire community involved.
Gilang Satrio Hindarto, Coordinator of the UGM Hiri Island team, expressed optimism that the expo will positively impact Hiri Island through tourism and cultural preservation.
“We are committed to positioning Hiri Island as a destination known not only for its natural beauty but also for its cultural values,” he stated in an interview on Tuesday (Aug. 6).
Emphasizing the importance of environmental sustainability, the expo will also promote eco-friendly tourism practices. Visitors will be encouraged to join beach cleanup activities and attend workshops on nature conservation, directly contributing to the preservation of Hiri Island for future generations.
Hindarto hopes the expo will inspire pride in Hiri Island’s natural and cultural wealth and encourage younger generations to preserve their ancestors’ heritage.
“This event aims to celebrate the island’s beauty and culture while raising awareness of their significance,” he explained.
Hiri Island’s rich cultural diversity is evident in daily life. The island offers a deep cultural experience, from vibrant traditional arts like dance and music to unique culinary traditions. These elements reflect the island’s values and traditions, providing visitors with an authentic experience.
Hindarto emphasized the importance of educating visitors on the island’s cultural values. He hopes the event will effectively promote Indonesia’s top tourist destinations globally.
“With a blend of breathtaking natural beauty, authentic cultural richness, and a commitment to environmental conservation, Hiri Island has everything needed to become a sustainable and meaningful tourism destination,” he remarked.
Nuri Kalbu Anugrah, another UGM KKN student involved in organizing the event, added that the Hiri Island Culinary and Tourism Expo has received full support from the local government and active participation from the community.
“This event aims to strengthen local identity and boost community welfare,” Anugrah said.
The 2024 Hiri Island Culinary and Tourism Expo will feature various activities, including the Sustainable Tourism Seminar, the Historical Traces of Hiri Island Seminar, and a local MSME Expo showcasing local products and supporting the local economy.
In addition, visitors can explore Hiri Island’s tourist attractions and enjoy performances at the Cultural Arts Stage.
“These traditional arts performances will entertain and educate people,” added Anugrah.
Anugrah also highlighted the importance of local community participation, a critical factor in the event’s success. Through the MSME Expo, local entrepreneurs can expand their market reach and boost income, ultimately contributing to the community’s economic well-being.
