Four study programs within the Department of Physics at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM) have successfully obtained international accreditation from ASIIN (Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik).
The accredited programs include the Bachelor’s programs in Physics and Geophysics and the Master’s and Doctoral programs in Physics. ASIIN is a Germany-based accreditation agency that evaluates engineering, informatics, natural sciences, and mathematics study programs.
The Head of the Department of Physics at UGM, Professor Edi Suharyadi, stated that this international accreditation achievement reflects the department’s continuous efforts to improve and enhance the quality of its study programs.
“This international accreditation is part of the assessment and evaluation process aimed at ongoing and sustainable improvement to advance our study programs,” said Professor Suharyadi in a statement to reporters on Monday (Aug. 12).
Professor Suharyadi explained that the acquisition of international accreditation complements the existing national accreditation, thus providing the study programs within the Physics Department an opportunity to excel at the national level and compete globally.
According to Professor Suharyadi, ASIIN’s recognition of these four study programs emphasizes the department’s commitment to ensuring the quality of education through consistent quality monitoring efforts. This includes assessments of inputs, processes, outputs, and, importantly, the educational outcomes of the study programs.
With ASIIN accreditation, graduates from these four study programs in UGM’s Department of Physics will have a competitive edge in the global community.
“They are recognized as having competencies that meet international standards, thereby opening up broader career opportunities in various sectors, domestically and internationally,” he added.
This international accreditation achievement was obtained following the evaluation and verification of ASIIN documents by the accreditation team, which included Professor Gert-Ludwig Ingold, Professor Ethem Buelent Tezkan, Dr. Herri Trilaksana, Langgam Bagas Pratomo, Muhammad Taufigi, and Dr. Natalia Vega.
The accreditation visit took place on March 5-6, 2024. During the visit, the ASIIN accreditation team met and discussed with students, faculty members, alumni, the curriculum team, and department and faculty administrators.
This was done to conduct a comprehensive assessment of various aspects of each study program and provide feedback to enhance its quality.
