The UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM) has reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing accounting education in Indonesia, especially in the eastern regions.
This commitment was demonstrated through Intensive Training in Accounting, Institutional Finance, and Accounting Computerization for 24 students from the Accounting Department of SMK Negeri 1 Teluk Bintuni, West Papua.
The training was carried out through a collaboration between the Center for Accounting Education Studies (PKAP), the Center for Information Systems Studies (PKSI), the Accountant Professional Education at FEB UGM, and the Department of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports of Teluk Bintuni Regency.
24 Indigenous Papuan (OAP) students attended the training at FEB UGM from July 15 to August 31, 2024.
These 24 participants are students from the OAP affirmative program selected from vocational schools in Teluk Bintuni Regency.
The training aims to equip students with relevant accounting skills in the digital age while preparing them for the workforce or further education at the university level.
Dr. Gumilang Aryo Sahadewo, Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni at FEB UGM, hopes this training will stimulate students’ enthusiasm for continuing their education at the university level, especially at FEB UGM.
Albertus Anofa, Head of the Teluk Bintuni Education Office, described the training as part of a practical and internship program for students advancing from 11th to 12th grade.
“This kind of training and internship is being conducted for the first time. We hope it will enhance the students’ knowledge. We hope that, after graduation, the knowledge gained can be applied in our region,” he explained.
The training will last seven weeks and include two weeks of Financial Accounting Training, two weeks of Institutional Finance Training, and two weeks of Digital Accounting Training, along with three weeks of a Teaching Factory involving hands-on practice with SMEs.
The learning activities will be conducted five days a week using a tutorial and practical accounting model with SIDEK-Edu and SIDEK-ERP applications developed by FEB UGM’s Accounting Laboratory.
In accordance with school lesson hours, there are five sessions per day, each lasting 45 minutes. The training consists of 75 tutorial sessions and 50 practical sessions.
One participant, Roni Yosep Mukuan, expressed his enthusiasm for the training. He hopes to gain new insights and knowledge.
“I feel very fortunate to receive training directly from one of the prestigious universities in Indonesia. I will take as much knowledge as possible for my future,” he said.
This intensive training is part of FEB UGM’s efforts to implement sustainable development in the education sector, mainly supporting education in Papua.
The program is expected to serve as a role model for other educational institutions to actively participate in developing education in remote areas of Indonesia, especially Papua.
This program hoped to produce more skilled and knowledgeable young Papuans who can significantly contribute to developing their regions and Indonesia.
The intensive accounting training organized by FEB UGM is anticipated to strengthen individual capacity and contribute to sustainable development at both the local and national levels, which aligns with the vision of FEB UGM and the Sustainable Development Goals.
