The Religious Affairs Counselor of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, Jean-Christophe Peaucelle, visited Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).
Professor Wening Udasmoro, UGM’s Vice-Rector for Education and Teaching, welcomed the visit, which took place at the UGM Central Office on Friday (Oct. 25).
Professor Udasmoro mentioned that during Mr Peaucelle’s visit to UGM, discussions centered around the potential for collaboration through an international conference focusing on religious life in both countries.
According to her, France is eager to learn about religious tolerance in Indonesia.
“In this conference, it is hoped that there will be a presentation on religious life in France and Indonesia. The event aims to foster shared insights on how to build peace,” Professor Udasmoro explained.
Udasmoro further stated that Mr Peaucelle agreed that religion plays a crucial role in societal life, making it essential to explore the topic of tolerance between religious communities and their surroundings.
“People are encouraged to think about religion positively,” she added.
During the meeting, Mr Peaucelle explained that France faces significant religious challenges, particularly from radical groups.
He expressed a desire to learn from Indonesia’s experience in addressing violence and intolerance in the name of religion.
“We seek to gain insight, as France is facing this issue, and one potential source is UGM’s CRCS (Master’s Program in Religious and Cross-cultural Studies), which often addresses such issues,” he stated.
He also explained that France adheres to a secular system, separating religion and politics. However, this does not mean there is no connection.
He noted that religion can be both a conflict factor and a peace mediator, requiring practical diplomatic action.
“Several countries, including France, share the same values, but each acts differently,” he said.
