Some members of society still harbor negative stigmas regarding hypnosis therapy. However, clinical hypnotherapy can be utilized as a supportive therapy or alternative method to address various psychological complaints and emotional disturbances.
Professor Kwartarini Wahyu Yuniarti from the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Gadjah Mada stated that neuroscience studies the nervous system or neurons, approached from multiple disciplines, including psychology.
“Neuroscience research is essential in the field of clinical hypnotherapy to explain the neurological and physiological responses resulting from the interventions applied,” Professor Yuniarti said during the workshop titled “Transpersonal and Clinical Hypnosis” on Friday (Sep. 13) in Room A-203 of the UGM Faculty of Psychology.
Her research conducted since 2019 shows that the use of hypnosis in therapy leads to rapid changes in cases of smoking cessation and specific phobias through memory reconstruction.
“The positive changes observed in the subjects of this research convinced me that clinical hypnotherapy can be maximally utilized,” she explained.
The UGM Faculty of Psychology organized the workshop in collaboration with the Hypnotic Guided Imagery and Transpersonal Research Studio (HGI Studio).
This hybrid event was attended by participants from various backgrounds and professions, including students, psychologists, workers, and the general public, who were interested in learning more about hypnotherapy and its implementation in modern psychology practices.
During the workshop, Professor Yuniarti, affectionately known as Bo, invited participants to recognize the strengths stored within themselves.
She instructed participants to follow her guidance, such as inhaling and exhaling deeply while maintaining full concentration. Professor Yuniarti emphasized the importance of self-acceptance.
“The ability to be grateful and to love oneself is essential. You cannot love without first learning to accept yourself,” Professor Yuniarti advised.
