Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being developed in a variety of forms at an increasing pace. This has sparked discussions about raising public awareness of the importance of policies or regulations surrounding AI.
This topic was highlighted during a press conference held by the Institute of International Studies Universitas Gadjah Mada (IIS UGM) on Monday (Feb. 17) at UGM’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM) to promote a community called STAIR Community.
Dr. Suci Lestari Yuana, a lecturer in UGM’s Department of International Relations and an advocate of the STAIR Community, stated that they would hold a short course.
The course aims to increase public awareness of the importance of regulations and ethics in AI amidst increasingly complex social challenges in the digital era.
Dr. Yuana also noted that STAIR integrates science, technology, and the arts and applies them to International Relations. By viewing technology as an agent shaping social and political realities, Dr. Yuana explained that STAIR helps participants develop critical thinking about the impact of digital transformation on society.
Meanwhile, Dr. Okky Puspa Madasari, a research fellow at IIS and the founder of OM Institute (Omong-Omong Institute), presented her perspective on the relationship between technology and the arts as a writer.
She explained that technology, the arts, science, and international relations are inseparable when discussing social progress.
She mentioned that many complex issues, such as copyright and economic justice, require understanding from various perspectives.
Additionally, Dr. Madasari emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities and the private sector in promoting research and innovation.
According to her, major advancements in science and technology involve cooperation between these sectors.
“I hope this short course from STAIR will serve as a platform for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to work together to find the best solutions for Indonesia,” she concluded.
Founded in 2022, the STAIR Community has hosted numerous interdisciplinary discussions. The topics covered are not limited to International Relations students but also involve the arts and technology.
Some offline discussions have addressed topics such as video games, the digital economy, and even the politics of music.
Additionally, STAIR has published several books and working papers discussing the role of technology and the arts in international relations.
In this short course, organized by the STAIR Community, IIS UGM and OM Institute will collaborate with the Goto Group (GoTo) to discuss four topics: STAIR and Interdisciplinary Approaches, Technology and AI in Public Policy, Analysis of Arts and Aesthetics in Global Politics, and Analyzing and Writing from the STAIR Perspective.
