During the Eid holiday, an estimated 1.05 to 1.1 million tourists are expected to visit various destinations in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). This forecast reflects a 9% increase in tourist movement compared to the previous year.
The influx presents a significant economic opportunity for tourism operators and local governments preparing for the visitor surge.
Dr. Destha Titi Raharjana, a researcher at UGM’s Center for Tourism Studies (Puspar UGM), stated that the movement of people for the Eid return journey significantly boosts the economy through increased circulation of money, and Yogyakarta is a favored destination for many.
“For Eid 2025, DIY is likely to remain a favorite for returning visitors, especially with easy access and connectivity from various regions for tourism,” he explained on Wednesday, Mar. 19, 2025.
The wide range of tourist attractions is a key factor drawing visitors to Yogyakarta.
Various innovative tourist activities and attractions developed by the government and tourism operators are enticingpeople outside Yogyakarta to explore and experience the region.
Popular destinations include the natural beauty of Gunungkidul’s beaches, underground caves like Goa Pindul and Kali Suci, and the ancient volcano area at Nglanggeran.
These locations are expected to attract curious visitors, particularly those outside the region.
Additionally, places like Parangtritis Beach in Bantul remain major tourist draws, while Mangunan’s lush pine forest offers a refreshing alternative for those seeking something new.
“In the western part of Yogyakarta, particularly the Menoreh hills of Kulon Progo, unique landscapes, and activities, along with various culinary and shopping options in village tourism areas, are also likely to appeal to returning visitors,” Dr. Raharjana added.
He acknowledged that social media plays a significant role in influencing tourist interest.
Photos and videos shared online often pique curiosity and motivate travelers to visit.
“Whether for dining or just taking photos, social media has been a major driver of tourist interest. The viral nature of certain destinations and culinary spots motivates visitors from outside Yogyakarta to come and experience them firsthand,” he explained.
However, Dr. Raharjana noted that the threat of extreme weather is likely to overshadow this year’s Eid holiday.
Citing information from the Yogyakarta Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG DIY), extreme weather conditions are expected to persist, with risks only subsiding during the first ten days of April 2025.
“BMKG DIY predicts that heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds could continue until April 2025,” he said.
In light of this, he urged the government and tourism operators to take preventive measures during the rainy season.
They must ensure no water blockages or waste accumulation during the holiday period, and they should anticipate potential damage caused by strong winds and other hazards.
“In case of prolonged heavy rain, drainage must remain clear, and waste must be managed, as recent waste issues have affected the city. Regular inspections of trees should also be conducted to minimize the risk of disaster,” he said.
Dr. Raharjana emphasized the importance of contingency plans, which both the government and tourism operators must prepare for emergencies.
It is important to ensure a quick response and coordination with security and health authorities to ensure tourists’ safety and comfort.
He commended the Sleman Regency Government for developing the Sleman Disaster Resilience Information System (SIMANTAB) app, which provides disaster reports, alerts, and other useful information.
Additionally, in Srimulyo Bantul, Dewi Mulia tourist village management initiated an app as an early warning system.
A prototype of this app has been tested in Kaligawe. It monitors river water levels to help prevent flood risks, especially in riverside tourism areas.
“This app helps ensure safety by enabling anticipatory measures to secure riverside areas before any harmful impact occurs,” he explained.
