The esports ecosystem has become an integral part of the digital culture among today’s youth. This form of online multiplayer video game competition demands creativity, motor skills, quick reflexes, and strategic thinking.
At Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), esports enthusiasts are supported through the Esports Student Activity Unit (UKM Esports UGM).
“This esports unit is one of the most adaptive and relevant student organizations in response to the times,” said Dr. Widyastuti Purbani, Vice Dean of the UGM Faculty of Philosophy and advisor to UKM Esports UGM, during the Infinix AI – Campus Connect 2025 seminar titled Create Smarter, Work Faster.
The event, held on Wednesday (May 27) at the Notonagoro Building, Faculty of Philosophy, explored the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool for creativity and ethical reflection.
Dr. Widyastuti, often known as Widy, explained that the Faculty of Philosophy pays close attention to both the development of video game sports and the ethics of AI. She noted that video games present an interesting intersection of philosophy, technology, and creativity.
“Many final thesis projects by Philosophy students now explore topics on AI and esports. We see this as an important space for discussion to ensure that technology continues to serve human values,” said Professor Widyastuti.
Meanwhile, Nindya Rahmaningrum, a member of the organizing committee, stated that the discussion involving Esports members and students aimed to broaden their understanding of AI use in the current era.
The seminar examined how AI can be applied in everyday life, particularly for students, as a tool to support daily tasks in accordance with ethical principles.
“So, this discussion was useful for students to gain new insights,” she said.
She added that the collaboration between Infinix and UGM not only introduced advanced technology but also encouraged participants to think critically about how AI can be used responsibly and meaningfully.
The synergy between industry, academia, and the student community demonstrates the importance of building an ethical and creative AI ecosystem in Indonesia.
“To conclude the event, the excitement was enhanced by a Mobile Legends fun match, offering attractive prizes for the winners,” she added.
One of the seminar participants, Rahmayasi from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, shared that the event was highly beneficial for Gen Z as AI users.
“Through this event, we learned how to use AI ethically and that AI is a helpful tool for students,” she said.
