Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has inaugurated 1,017 new engineers from its Professional Engineering Program, jointly organized by the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Animal Science, and Faculty of Forestry.
The second inauguration ceremony of 2025, held at Grha Sabha Pramana on Tuesday (Jul. 8), saw 859 engineers conferred from the Faculty of Engineering, 94 from the Faculty of Animal Science, and 64 from the Faculty of Forestry. With this addition, UGM’s total number of engineering graduates has reached 6,414.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UGM, Professor Selo, stated that the inauguration of these new engineers marks a significant contribution to Indonesia’s infrastructure development efforts.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Sigit Sunarta, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry at UGM, expressed his pride in the achievements of the graduates, which include several from Timor-Leste.
He emphasized that the conferment ceremony is more than a formal event; it signifies professional recognition, but one that is inherent in every engineer.
“Today’s engineers must go beyond mastering technical aspects; they must also be problem solvers for issues such as food security, infrastructure, and industrial transformation,” he said.
Dr. Sunarta stressed that engineers must become agents of change in advancing sustainable development. UGM remains committed to improving the quality of its engineering professional education, promoting lifelong learning, and continuously strengthening professional competencies.
“We entrust our hopes to the graduates, to be pioneers of innovation, lifelong learners, and guardians of professional integrity. This nation needs engineers who work with conscience and respond to real-world challenges,” he affirmed.
Representing the newly inaugurated engineers, Eka Yogatama shared that this milestone marks the beginning of a significant responsibility as professionals. He highlighted the importance of humanistic values and dedication in every step of an engineering career.
“We believe that the engineering title is not merely an accolade, but a transformative tool and a mandate to contribute to our nation,” he stated.
Dr. Teguh Haryono, General Secretary of the Institution of Engineers Indonesia (PII), encouraged the newly conferred engineers to join and actively contribute through PII.
He remarked that an engineer’s role goes beyond constructing buildings and infrastructure, but it also involves building civilization.
“Therefore, engineers must be capable of delivering innovation for the nation,” he concluded.
